== What "Main Page" Really Costs ==

Let’s cut the bullshit. When people ask what military service cost me, they picture medals or combat. Wrong. The real cost isn’t the blood on the sand—it’s the quiet moments I can’t unsee. The birthdays I missed, the normal conversations I can’t have without hearing a scream in my head. I traded family holidays for triage tents. I gave up the luxury of not knowing how close I came to losing it all.  

What did I gain? Not glory. I gained the ability to hold space for others’ pain. To see the tremor in a firefighter’s hands and know it’s not weakness—it’s courage. I learned that healing isn’t about fixing; it’s about showing up when the ground is gone. That’s the gift I carry now, as a therapist. I’ve seen the worst, and I’ve seen people survive it.  

Was it worth it? Yes. But not because I’m some hero. It was worth it because I chose to stay present when everything else was collapsing. Courage isn’t what you think—it’s not charging into fire. It’s staying when the fire’s out, and the silence is deafening. It’s asking for help when you’re drowning.  

Here’s what works: Stop romanticizing the cost. Acknowledge the trade-off. You gave up normal. You gained purpose. And purpose isn’t a thing you earn—it’s a choice you make every damn day. If you’re carrying the weight of what you lost, let it go. Your worth isn’t measured in what you sacrificed. It’s measured in how you use what you kept.  

I still have nights where the memories ambush me. But now? I know how to breathe through it. I know how to ask for help. That’s the real cost of service: it doesn’t end when you leave the field. It just changes shape. And that shape? It’s the reason I’m still here, still serving.
